Florence, 13 January 2021 – Cinema Nervi is a videoart project which offers an enriching contemporary and experimental contribution to the exhibition Pier Luigi Nervi, Structure and Beauty*, dedicated to the work of the world-renowned Italian architectural engineer, on display in the temporary exhibition spaces at Manifattura Tabacchi.
The project is the result of a collaboration with Parasite 2.0, a collective based in Milan, London and Brussels, whose work focuses on the state of the human habitat through a hybrid of architecture, art and design, using digital tools and the cross-contamination of different artforms to revisit the architecture of Nervi in a contemporary and inter-disciplinary way. It is an approach which mirrors the experimentation explored by NAM – Not A Museum, a contemporary art programme from Manifattura Tabacchi.
Parasite 2.0 has drawn its inspiration from one of Nervi’s most beloved projects, the Cinema-Teatro Augusteo in Napoli, calling on the contribution of 5 different international architectural studios, artists and designers. Lucia Tahan (Berlin), Clube (Sao Paolo), The Pleasure Paradox (Milan, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Rotterdam), Anabel Garcia-Kurland (London) and Alessio Grancini (Los Angeles), have been asked to reinterpret various works of ‘Nervian’ architecture; respectively, the Palazzo del Lavoro in Turin, the Italian Embassy in Brasilia, Manifattura Tabacchi and the Stadio G. Berta (now known as the Artemio Franchi) both in Florence, and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, using design tools that would have been unknown during Nervi’s time; video and digital artforms.
